PIECES (THE BREAKAWAY #2) BY MICHELLE D. ARGYLE - REVIEW

15783450
pic and description taken from Goodreads

Description:
Two years after watching her kidnappers go to prison, Naomi Jensen is still in love with one of them. Jesse will be released in a few years, and Naomi knows college is the perfect distraction while she waits. But when her new friend Finn makes her question what is right and what is wrong, she begins to wonder if Jesse is the one for her...until she discovers he's out on parole. Naomi must sort through her confusion to figure out where love and freedom truly lie-in Finn, who has no connections to her past, or Jesse, who has just asked her to run away with him.

Pieces is a companion to The Breakaway and can be read independently, if desired.

My Review / Thoughts:
***** may contain spoilers if you haven't read the first one ***

OH MY GOSH!  I thought the first book was good, and then I got to this one.  It's awesome.  It's on my Itunes, and I haven't had a chance to listen to it for a while, but today I decided it WOULD be finished.  Seriously...I have to put this definition up again.  It is a syndrome that is "mind boggling" to me.

Stockholm syndrome, or capture-bonding, is a psychological phenomenon in which hostages express empathy and sympathy and have positive feelings toward their captors, sometimes to the point of defending and identifying with them. These feelings are generally considered irrational in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims, who essentially mistake a lack of abuse from their captors for an act of kindness.[1][2] The FBI's Hostage Barricade Database System shows that roughly 8% of victims show evidence of Stockholm syndrome.[3]
Stockholm syndrome can be seen as a form of traumatic bonding, which does not necessarily require a hostage scenario, but which describes "strong emotional ties that develop between two persons where one person intermittently harasses, beats, threatens, abuses, or intimidates the other."[4] One commonly used hypothesis to explain the effect of Stockholm syndrome is based on Freudian theory. It suggests that the bonding is the individual's response to trauma in becoming a victim. Identifying with the aggressor is one way that the ego defends itself. When a victim believes the same values as the aggressor, they cease to be a threat.[5]

Naomi, Naomi, Naomi.  Girl, we need to sit and have a little chat about self esteem and making good choices.  This character is fantastic, and frustrating.  More frustrating than anything.  Most of the time I am hitting my head saying "DUH" Naomi, "don't to that".  Argyle does a great job of showing us just how real this syndrome can be.  Scary, and I mean super scary, but real.

Naomi has a hard time adjusting to "normal" life.  I think I can understand that.  Living with people who threaten you one minute and then treat you like their best friend the next.  THEN all of the sudden being set "free".   I can see how she would have a hard time adjusting.  My heart aches though that she thinks what she feels for Jesse is real love.  How on earth could she ever think that was real love?  Don't get me wrong, Jesse is a smooth talker.  While reading I would think to my self "aww that was so sweet"...WAIT, he is the kidnapper.  It's NOT sweet.

Naomi, goes away to school in hopes of returning to a normal life.  She sits in a cafe every day and draws and in the mean time becomes friends with a waiter there by the name of Finn.  I had high hopes for Naomi when she met Finn.  Unfortunately poor, damaged Naomi couldn't see what was right before her very eyes.  She couldn't see that Finn was a good man, with good intentions.  Who liked to talk to her, who worried about her, and yet hardly knew her outside of the cafe.  Someone who was genuinely interested in her for HER.  No...poor Naomi only had eyes for her kidnapping boyfriend Jesse.

Then Naomi finds out that Jesse is out on parole.  Of course she is not suppose to have any contact with him, so you know she is going to do just the opposite.  She doesn't know how not to.  Her kidnappers had brainwashed her to the point that she thought without them, there wasn't anywhere else to go.  She could never see what her counselors, parents and friends were trying to point out to her.  That Jesse was no good.

I wanted to scream at Naomi...here are RED FLAGS for why you should NOT see Jesse.  Red flag #1.  Moving and not telling your parents.  Red Flag 2...Having him find out you have a phone and blocks everyone you know from it.  Red Flag 3...shady men in bars.  Red Flag #4 He is a freaking kidnapper.

So naturally Naomi would think going to Italy would be the right thing to do.  A new place, a new life.
I actually sighed out loud when she walked into her room in Italy with Jesse.  I knew she would find a way to be with him, but I certainly didn't expect them to leave the country.  Naomi, so young and so naive, and so damaged.

I slammed my hands on my table a few times during their Italy experience.  Really.  I was so angry and dumbfounded.

I am so very grateful for that one (okay, maybe a few) moments of clarity when she realizes that being with Jesse is never going to be a good idea.    When she finally see's him for what he really is. A bad guy.

The ending of this book is touching.  Getting to the ending was a journey.  I would say page turning journey, but I was listening to it ;).  This series was probably the hardest series for me to wrap my head around in a long time.  Not because it was bad, but because it was about something I have never read before.   The psychological torment that Naomi journeys though is almost too much to take in.

Great job Argyle.  Great job.

SON OF WAR, DAUGHTER OF CHAOS TOUR / REVIEW

Son of War Daughter of Chaos Blog Tour

  SonOfWarEBook

Son of War, Daughter of Chaos

Aislynn is accustomed to watching for the enemy. Her parents instructed her from the time she was young to look for the signs: people with greater than normal strength, eyes that can glow green, and have the ability to jump long distances. Over the years, Aislynn has come to view her parents’ fears as quirks—things that get in the way of having a normal high school life. When Aislynn’s mother dies under suspicious conditions, her father doubles his restrictions. But all his precautions can’t stop the boy with glowing green eyes from finding Aislynn. She realizes too late she’s been drafted into an ancient Egyptian war, whether she’s prepared or not.

My Review / Thoughts:

Aislynn, Roark and their father, are Setite's as well as Cordelia and Jack.  Who are also a brother and sister.  Then there was Dane one of Roark's friends.  Aislynn wanted to be more than friends with Dane.

Dane is a Horusian.  What is a Horusian you may ask?  Well I wish I could tell you :).  What I can tell you is that having read it I still cannot decide who the bad guys are and who the good guys are.  I wish I wasn't serious, but I am.  I LOVE, LOVE it when a book can do that to me.

Rallison (aka C.J. Hill) has done it again.  I have yet to read a book of hers that I have not fell in love with.  Her writing is beautiful.  This book was so intense.  It was AWESOME.

Like I said above I cannot tell if the Setites or the Horusians are good guys or bad guys.  I think there are good and bad things about both of them, so even as I was coming to the end, I was hoping to determine for sure who were the "bad" guys.  It might be more obvious to some than me, but Rallison realllllllly needs to do a sequel :).  I dreamt about this book last night, as I always do when a book doesn't have a definite ending.  I guess it could have one, but in my head there is so much more that could happen.  So in her interview at the end of the book she says that if she can sell 10,000 copies of this book she will do a sequel.  Lets just say, I am going to recommend this book to every person I know so that we can reach that goal.  I need a sequel....Selfish?  Of course I am ;).

I loved the Egyptian link in this book.  I loved the characters.  I loved the writing.  I do not think there is anything that I do not like about this book.  (well other than I want a sequel, but that is my own issue...hehe).

I loved this book.  That is all there is too it.  I wish I could say more, but almost anything I say will give too much away.  You should really go buy a copy!  No, Really!  I so want a sequel...hehe

Let me say, "I LOVE this cover!"  Rallison is a master at drawing me into whatever book I am reading of hers.  I am never disappointed with her books....I just added a few more to my collection :).

EXCERPT:
I was on my feet and running down the path before I could fully process what was happening. The dark swarm flew toward me. Their wings sounded like the dull hum of an incoming storm. I didn’t have to see them to know they were scarabs—the flesh-eating kind. The Horusians had pinpointed our location and flown in beetles to kill us. How they found us, I didn’t know.
As I fled down the slope, I slipped. My feet jerked out in front of me. I hit the ground, hard, skidding and then flipped over. I tumbled down the slope, clawing at the ice, trying to get a handhold. White flashes of snow jumbled together in my vision. Finally, I hit a flat spot. I managed to stop, pick myself up, and run again. Panic wrapped around me. I couldn’t make it off the ridge before the scarabs reached me, and even if I could, I had nowhere to hide from the beetles on this open stretch of land. Still, I ran. I wouldn’t stand still for death.

Author Janette Rallison
Janette Rallison is old. Don’t ask how old, because it isn’t polite. Let’s just say she’s older than she’d like to be and leave it at that. Janette lives in Chandler, Arizona with her husband, five children and enough cats to classify her as “an eccentric cat lady.” She did not do this on purpose. (The cats, that is; she had the children on purpose.) Every single one of the felines showed up on its own and refuses to leave. Not even the family’s fearless little Westie dog can drive them off. Since Janette has five children and deadlines to write books, she doesn’t have much time left over for hobbies. But since this is the internet and you can’t actually check up to see if anything on this site is true, let’s just say she enjoys dancing, scuba diving, horse back riding and long talks with Orlando Bloom. (Well, I never said he answers back.)

PLUMB CRAZY BY MOLLY BLAISDELL - BOOK TOUR

18716726

Plumb Crazy
Release Date: 06/10/14

Summary from Goodreads:

Small town country girl Elva Presley Hicks is about to attend her five-year class reunion with her best friends, Shay and Margarett.

The discovery of an old fanfic manuscript stirs up memories of her summer job as a plumber’s helper in Houston the summer before senior year. She earned a lot of money that year, but was lonely as heck.

It's not like there weren't any suitors back then. Elva could have chosen between Chase, the obese pig farmer, and Wyatt, the plumber with wandering hands. But Elva yearned for something more, and found it that fateful summer, with electrician, Mitch McCall.

It was magical. Mitch wasn't turned off by Elva's name or fan fiction writing, and Elva didn't lose interest in Mitch after he cut off his nose at work.

Trials and triumphs followed including a friendship implosion, world-wide fanfic humiliation, and goat salvation. It would go down as the most memorable summer of high school.

But as these things sometimes do, the summer romance fizzled and Elva moved on to life after high school. And while she's ready to reminisce, she is unnerved when she runs into Mitch at the reunion. Can they give it another go after so much time has passed, or are they too different now to even try?

5 Movie Faves, Old School!

I am a movie fanatic. I adore my Katniss, all things Marvel (expect for Daredevil), Joss Whedon, Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro, Richard Linklater, Hayao Miyazaki, and Chris Nolan. That said, here are my top five old school faves.

Galaxy Quest – I love this movie. I always will. It respects fandom in a way that I deeply appreciate. Because of it, when I see a good deal, I say, "By Graphtar's hammer, what a savings."

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension – This all-star cast gem (Peter Weir, Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Lloyd) is awesomeness. This was the first exclusive movie I ever saw at a Con. I still wonder what the watermelon was for….

She's All That – Yes, I am a Freddie Prinze Jr. fan. I loved this movie. It was a magical teen romance. You know, the hottest guy in school will reform the ugly girl (only because she wears glasses.) Does that ever get old? Freddie's performance bit with that hacky sack stays with me.

The Wrath of Khan – I love this movie. It was like Star Trek rising from the dead. I mean the first movie just didn't catch the spirit of Star Trek. It was too into the special effects and didn't get that we really just wanted the old gang back not Decker and that bald gal. Yeah, we wanted Khan shouting "..from hell's heart I stab at thee!"

Star Wars – Just keeping it real folks. I've seen Star Wars over 50 times. I'm a Luke gal. I stood in line all night to see the movies. I even watched the Wookie Christmas special and thought it was fantastic. May the force be with you.

RANDOM READS HOSTED BY I'M LOVING BOOKS - AUGUST PICKS

I found this awesome meme because of Feed Your Fiction Addiction which led me to I'm Loving Books.  I love this meme.  It helps me read at least one book a month in my TBR pile that I have been dying to read and just haven't been able to.

I was only able to finish one.  I was hoping I would be able to get 3 read again, but no such luck.

So my only Random Read this month was pick #257 - The Appeal of Evil

The review can be found here
19549576

So instead of picking new ones I am going to keep by Random Read picks from last month and hopefully I can finish them for August.  Yay!

August Random Read Picks Are:

#2 is #510 - Don't Call Me Baby by Gwendolyn Heasley
and
#3 is #179 - If Only We by Jessica Sankiewicz

REVIEW PILE READING CHALLENGE FROM JULY

ReviewBooks_sq

I am so glad I entered this challenge.  It seems like most of the books I read these days are "review" books, so now that there is a challenge it seems easier for me to do.  Probably doesn't make sense, but when I have a "dead line" it makes things easier for me.  This particular challenge is hosted by
[FIKT] SHUN and PHANTASMIC READS.

I did not do as well this month...I feel a bit sheepish.  I purposely didn't sign up for very man reviews, so I could read the pile that is on my shelf.  Wellllll, I decided there were a few others I wanted to read instead...hehe!   Oh well, hopefully I will do better next month.

This month I finished I only finished 2 ;)

Diamond Rings are Deadly Things....review here
20717472
It was sooo good :)

NEXT

Surviving Hitler - The Unlikely True Story of an SS Soldier and a Jewish Woman......review here

Such an inspirational and fantastic book!

Well, like I said I didn't get much done, but the two that I did were FANTASTIC!  Hopefully next month will be better.

The Tesla Gate

When a cosmic storm enters Earth’s atmosphere, scientists are baffled by its composition and origins, but not nearly as much as they are by the storm’s side effect – anyone who has died and chosen not to cross over is suddenly stranded here, visible, and can interact with the living. With the world thrown into chaos, Thomas Pendleton is eager to make up for many broken promises to his six-year-old son, Seth. Soon after the storm, they set out on a road trip to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC, completely unaware of the social and political maelstrom they’re heading into that will change their lives forever.

Excerpt 2
Frozen, I listened and heard nothing. I was just about to move on to the TV when a faint noise met my ears. I listened curiously at first, but the longer I listened the faster my heart began to race. Was that someone crying? The more I listened, the more certain I became that a child was crying in Seth’s room. Could this have been one of his friends that had snuck into his room to privately mourn? I didn’t think so; Seth was only six after all and the nearest child his age lived about four blocks away; a far piece for a six year old to travel by himself. But still, I was positive about what I was hearing; it was definitely the undersized sobs of a child.
My tinge of curiosity was quickly replaced by a creepy feeling like 100 mice were running up and down my spine. My interest about what was going on outside had been brushed aside for a new single minded focus. Who or what was on the other side of the door?
I slowly crept toward the door, barely daring to breathe. A large vase beside the bathroom contained two large golf umbrellas. I grasped one by its protruding handle and slowly withdrew it from the vase, like a knight drawing his sword.  I didn’t know what the heck I was going to do with an umbrella, unless the intruder was armed with a water pistol. I guess it just gave me some sort of security as I moved to open the door, however false it may be.
I placed my left palm against the wood surface and gently pushed as it slowly started to swing inward. I poked the tip of the umbrella into the widening crack, ready to repel any attack that came my way. The door gave one last tiny creak as it came to a stop. As I peered into the bedroom, the umbrella dropped from my hand and my heart leapt into my throat.
=============================================================
My Review / Thoughts:

This book was so good, but it was an emotional roller coaster.  I honestly don't know what to say about this book without giving too much away.

We follow Thomas, Annabelle and Seth Pendleton, into a heart breaking journey.  Thomas was the kind of Father that spent way too much time at work and not nearly enough time at home.  This comes back to bite him in the butt in such a sad way.  His wife and son were killed in a car accident while he was on a business trip and it wasn't until then that Thomas realized how absent he was as a husband and a father.

Weird lights show up one night and they call it a "Cosmic Storm", but weird things begin to happen after the storm.

Seth shows up at Thomas's house.  Yup his dead son reappears to him.  He has a shimmer about him and he is cold to the touch but other than that Seth is back.  Thomas has a hard time at the very beginning but when it comes down to it, he is never going to let work get in the way of this precious time he has with this son.

What Thomas didn't realize is that other "Impals" showed up as well.  This is when the story starts to gets even more interesting.

I couldn't help but think of the Nazi's and the Jews and the horrible racism that went on during World War II.  The same thing kind of happen in this book, but on American soil.  Like I said before this is an emotional roller coaster.

The author did a great job of making me feel like I was sitting shot gun in the car with this family.  My heart ached at the racism, and betrayal that happened in this book.  It was so well written, and I hope you get a chance to read it.  It was a little frightening to me how quickly people turn on each other out of fear of the "unknown".

I would give anything to see my grandparents from both sides show up on my door step.  How could that ever be a bad thing?  But fear is a great motivator for extremest.  This book shows us just how far people would go to "rid" the earth of this "unnatural" phenomenon.

Just read it :).  I have probably already said too much :).  It's a great book.  It will make you think!

RELEASE DAY AND EXCERPT TOUR FINALE FOR - REIGN OF SHADOWS BY - MELISSA WRIGHT

Happy release day to

Launch
What do you hope readers will take with them when they read this last book in the series?
To me, things really come full circle with the characters, their relationships, and the dilemma of facing their lot in life. I think they've learned a lot, they've definitely been through some trials, but it was nice to give them that sense of understanding and the chance to see how things truly are. They had to either accept it or fight to the end, but it was nice to give them the choice.

Letters from Annie (Douglass) Lima - Chapter One

Heat pulsed through the warehouse, liquid fire pushed by some unseen force. Metal screamed and block crumbled, tearing away every protection she had from the gale. But it was not the light of fire that accompanied the wind, not the brightness of a flame. It was dark beneath the haze of fog.

It was a shadow...

Kelly P's Blog - Chapter One Cont'd
“No,” she whispered. “I’m sorry for what’s about to happen.” She tilted her head, drawing it from beneath his chin to look again at the amber of his eyes, the glow that was within them before suddenly stronger than she’d ever seen it. “I’m sorry for what I’ve set into motion...”

BookSkater - Chapter Two
“I’m ready,” the dark-haired man said, hands fisted at his sides. He was a complete contradiction to his audience, but he didn’t care. He wanted her. He would take her himself. “Let me at her before she has the chance to get any stronger...”

My Life, Loves and Passion - Chapter Three

Aern’s weight shifted, unconsciously moving toward her. He’d known the battle with Morgan was not the end. He’d seen it in Brianna’s eyes, felt it in her apology. They’d set some new chain of events into motion, brought some new fate down on them all...

Prism Book Tours - Chapter Three Cont'd

And here was the more Aern had thought he’d seen in Brianna’s expression. Because she’d known, once she’d found the connections to free herself and Emily, that they were not in place from centuries ago. Those binds, the ones that had kept their powers hidden, were put in place after they’d been born. And the only thing strong enough to do so would have been another shadow...

Book n Blog - Chapter Three Cont'd
“The thing is,” Brianna said, shifting just enough that her admission was directed to both of them, “the thing that doesn’t make sense is that she permitted us to be bound, chose this path for us, brought us to you.” She hesitated, eyes falling first to Aern and then lingering a heartbeat too long on Logan. “Because the shadows are the reason,” she wet her lips, “the ones who took the power from the Seven Lines to begin with.”

Mythical Books - Chapter Three Cont'd
Aern stared at her, everything that he’d learned in his youth rolling through his mind. The Seven Lines had once been powerful, able to do much more than simply use sway. Something had happened, something they’d called a thinning of the blood, that had slowly weakened their powers until no more than this remained. He wanted to not believe her. He wanted to keep thinking the stories they’d been told were true...

Christy's Cozy Corners - Chapter Four
But that slim blonde was gone now, taken when these men had invaded Westlake and destroyed the right half of her body. All that was left of her was the warrior, the daughter of a council elder with the blood of Sky. She was strong. She’d downed seven of their men before they’d strapped her into a truck and drove away from the fire and destruction that was the Division headquarters...

Book-Marks the Spot - Chapter Four Cont'd
His head hung, but he looked at Ellin from beneath his brow, swollen and bruised, cut and bleeding. She could still see the unhealed scars from the day he’d released Morgan. The day he’d tried to save their prophet. He wouldn’t give her now, not any single bit of information that would help them. He would never turn on Brianna...

Simplistic Reviews - Chapter Four Cont'd
He crouched beside her, fingertips rolling over his thumbs, and cocked one brow. “You know the rules Miss Walker. If you want to stop me from hurting Mr. Samuels, you’ll need to give me an answer in return.”

She swallowed against the thickness in her throat, new blood working free of her wounds. Her chest ached, fear and panic and unadulterated adrenaline.

Still, she managed to say, “Please, call me Ellin.”

He laughed. A short, shallow huff of air that said she’d surprised him, but it couldn’t have been true humor...

Wishful Endings - Chapter 5
He sighed. “We can’t leave him to …” He broke off, frustrated at their lack of information, and said, “Whatever he’s doing, Brianna, it’s wrong. We have to find him. He held you captive. He was working with Morgan.” His list stopped as he realized they had the key...

Katie's Clean Book Collection - Chapter 5 Cont'd
Brianna stood as well. “That’s not why you can’t go after him.” She’d been thinking about this for days, since before she’d known about Brendan. Since she’d realized what she and Emily were. She didn’t know if it was right, if it was the plan her mother had laid in place, but she wouldn’t be able to live with doing anything different. She had to protect them...

Nocturnal Predators Reviews - Chapter 5 Cont'd
Her eyes were closed, but she could feel him watching her as his hands stilled. A thumb rolled slowly up the side of her neck and she breathed deep, relaxing into the feel of his fingers as they came higher to trail feather-light over her cheek, her temple, barely brushing her eyelid. Logan's breath came out in what might have been a whisper, and then she felt him move, lips touching hers so gently that she couldn’t resist reaching for him, to pull him closer where he leaned over her...

Mary Terrani.com - Chapter 6
Aern stood in front of Brianna, hands clasped with hers as she searched his connections. He could feel Emily behind him from her spot on the edge of the sofa. He didn’t need to look to imagine her, hands twisted as she watched her sister work to restore some long-gone power within him. The bond was changing, becoming stronger—more real every moment—and it was as if he could sense her distress. This wasn’t some experiment to work toward a vague prophecy. This was Brianna’s last-chance gamble to try and save them from a vision she knew was true, a fight that was coming to them. A war they couldn’t escape...

My Devotional Thoughts - Chapter 6 Cont'd
“We think she’s trying to tell us about Brendan,” Eric said from behind them, his voice quiet.

Aern watched as Ellin’s eye closed tighter. “No,” he said. “Brianna. She’s trying to warn us about Brianna.” A grateful breath escaped her and she opened her eye to close it again, in a long blink. A yes...

His thumb slid over her cheek. “Don’t worry, Ellin. We have her. She’s safe.” Her gaze moved to his, another warning, and he answered, “We know they’re coming for her, but she’s safe...”

The Written Adventure - Chapter 6 Cont'd
“And if they find us?” Eric said.

Aern glanced at the door that Ellin’s cart had disappeared behind, remembering her broken body. As if they had played with her, taken their time. Brianna’s face when she’d described Brendan, when she’d said the others were coming.

His gaze met Eric’s, tone even. “Pray...”

The Wonderings of One Person - Chapter 7
It was time. She was getting stronger, finding her own answers, and it was going to be too late. He couldn’t go to her, the shadows had warned him against that, but there would be no call for issue if Brianna found him. If she initiated the contact. Come to me, Brianna, he thought. Come to me and I will show you why your kind is hiding...

Dalene's Book Reviews - Chapter 8

Logan’s lips pursed. “Hot dogs are over rated.”

She shook her head, shifting so that her denim-covered leg touched his. “You’re cooking them wrong.”

He laughed, turning to see her. “How’s that?”

“You have to smother them in chili and that radioactive-yellow cheese sauce, and then you cover the whole thing with a bag of corn chips...”

Deal Sharing Aunt - Chapter 8 Cont'd
She smirked. “They’re going to be a bit like Morgan, I’m afraid. They’re very proud of their power.” Her eyes went unfocused as she studied the visions, a set of futures where the lesser shadows sought her out. She couldn’t see them, exactly, but she could glimpse the events, knew the way things would unfold. She was hunting in the darkness, searching for bits of light in fog. These shadows weren’t as quick and ruthless, not like the others, but she knew that was coming, too. “Not all of them,” she said. “The men behind this, they aren’t in it for the glory.” She shivered, finding the last of the visions, the scenes too hard to relive. “They only want the outcome...”
