pic and description taken from Amazon

DESCRIPTION:
Rick Street is one of the unlucky ones. His rough past in the foster care system has led him to a life of homelessness. But despite it all, the handsome young man is a decent person which is why he steps out of the shadows one night when he realizes a girl is about to be victimized. When the police see Rick brandishing a knife in the young woman's defense, they're confident they've found the serial killer that has been stalking the streets of Salt Lake City . . .
When probation officer Miranda Martinez is assigned to Rick's case, she thinks she's in for a tedious project. Though he's been cleared as a suspect in an ongoing murder case, Miranda has been tasked with helping Rick to become a productive member of society. Impressed by the passion with which Rick works to turn his life around, she is unwillingly drawn to the successful and confident man he is becoming. But with their focus on one another, it's all too easy to forget that there is still a serial killer at large and when the strange phone calls begin, Miranda fears she may be the next target. As Rick uncovers his own shocking connection to the murderer, he must draw on his years on the streets to protect the woman he loves in a deadly race against time . . .

MY REVIEW / THOUGHTS:

I was at Deseret Book a couple of weeks ago and decided to buy some books on CD since I am always in my car.  I am so glad I picked this one up.  It was wonderful.

Rick Street started his life out a little rough.  He has lived on the street for years, and he is a survivor.  He wants to better his life, but doesn't quite know how to go about it.

One night Rick follows another street guy by the name of Slice.  Rick is sure Slice is up to no good, and this time he has a young woman with him.  Rick follows him, and when he hears screaming coming from a bathroom he goes in armed with a 2x4.  Right about the time the police enter the room and take Rick down.  They accuse him of aggravated assault and he is put in jail.

Rick's life goes from bad to worse.  To his udder delight the judge decides to do a little something different with Rick.  Ricks life takes an unexpected turn, and one that could be wonderful if he takes the opportunities that the judge has put before him.  He gets assigned a probation/case worker by the name of Miranda.  Miranda is suppose help Rick becoming a contributing member of society.

The story just gets more and more interesting. Rick is such a great character, and I cannot even tell you how bite-o-luscious this man is.  Just mmmm.  Okay, who says that about a street guy?  Oh, he is so much more than that!  I promise.  Just read and you will understand how fabulous he is.

Rick's life is full of surprises.  Some good, and some not so good.  Rick's story is so wonderful to follow.  It's full of twist and turns.  It kept me on my "drivers" seat the whole time.  It was hard to exit the car and turn the CD's off.  My kid complained every time because they couldn't watch a movie...hehehe!  Poor spoiled children.  hehe.

This book took so many different turns, it was awesome.  Once you think you have something figured out, another twist is thrown in.  The way it all comes together was A MAY ZING.

I don't want to give anything away, but if you like mystery, watching someone come into themselves, love, family.  You will like this book.  It's so fantastic.

MY REVIEW / THOUGHTS:

I said in my last review for THE SPIRIT HEIR that the books kept getting better.  This one did not disappoint.  It was so intense.

Jinji and Rhen are back.  Jinji and her twin Janu have been reunited.    Jinji feels like her whole world may make sense again.  While her reunion with Janu is everything she thought she wanted there is still danger lingering.

Rhen has seen what may happen to the world if he and Jenji do not stop it.  In the process Jinji learns something about her brother that forms and impossible decision for her to make.

Rhen and Jenji go through so much emotional turmoil in this book that I was constantly wishing that they could just catch a break :).

Rhen's love for Jinji is what every girl wants ;), and Jinji's for Rhen.  Sometimes I just wanted to crawl into my book and tell them "it's all going to be okay"...but then I read on, and something else would pop up.  hehe.  There didn't seem like there was ever any time for any of them to catch their breath.  It made for a wonderfully, intense story.

Plus, I love dragons.  Who doesn't?  I mean in my dream world I would totally have a pet dragon.  It would sit on my lawn and scare all those people away who put advertisements on my doors.  hehehe

I just loved everything about this book.  I could probably go on and on, but since it is the last book I want to leave it a question for you to have to answer for yourselves.  Plus, if I say too much more I will give it all away.  If you take the opportunity to read this series, in my opinion you will not be disappointed.  It just fantastic.

***  Side Note ***
Thanks to Kaitlyn Davis for allowing me the opportunity to review these wonderful books.  Your writing is amazing, and I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every minute submersed in this series!

EXCERPT FROM THE PHOENIX BORN CHAPTER 10

Jinji stopped him by grabbing his cheeks and pulling his face against hers, kissing him urgently. Rhen tried to pull away, to understand why she wasn't thrilled by the news, but her hands traveled to the back of his neck, grip tight, and he couldn't break her hold. Her lips moved fast against his, pleading with him silently. Everything about her was desperately trying to hold on to the moment, to stop time, as though she were drowning and the air from his lungs was the only thing that might save her, as though he were her tether to life.
Rhen wanted to give in. More than anything, he wanted to melt beneath her touch and forget the world, to kiss her until the sun rose the next morning, and even then maybe not stop. He could so easily get lost in the fire of her touch, the silkiness of her skin.
But he couldn't let himself.
The woman he loved was in pain.
Her kiss wasn't full of passion. It was full of dread. Rhen sensed the dark taste on his tongue.
"Jin," he mumbled against her lips.
But she didn't stop.
Rhen reached back, unlatching her fingers, pulling her forcibly away from him, finding her eyes. "Jin?"
And with that word, she couldn't avoid what was in her heart any longer. A tear rolled down her cheek, and she gave in, collapsing against him as her body racked with sobs. The moans came from a dark place within her, ripping their way up her throat, making him wince at the sound.
Rhen wanted to demand answers.
He wanted to force her to explain, to let him in, to tell him what had her so distraught.
But he didn't.

He just held her, kissing her forehead and rubbing her back. Not questioning. Not demanding. There would be time for answers later. Right now, Jinji needed a shoulder to cry on and nothing more. He gave that to her, embracing her until sleep claimed them both.

CHILDREN'S BOOK REVIEW FOR - THE DAY THE CRAYONS QUIT - BY DREW DAYWALT - ILLUSTRATED BY - OLIVER JEFFERS

16101018
pic and description taken from Goodreads

DESCRIPTION:

Poor Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: We quit!

Beige is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown. Blue needs a break from coloring all that water, while Pink just wants to be used. Green has no complaints, but Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking to each other.

What is Duncan to do? Debut author Drew Daywalt and New York Timesbestseller Oliver Jeffers create a colorful solution in this playful, imaginative story that will have children laughing and playing with their crayons in a whole new way.

MY REVIEW / THOUGHTS:

This was such a cute children's book.  My sister bought it for her grandson and I saw sitting on the table and had to pick it up.  Seriously it's so cute.

Duncan is a little boy who just wants to color...but his crayons have gone on strike.  Every one of them wants something more from Duncan.  It's so cute :).

Each color wants to have more attention.  If you have kids this is a cute book to read with them.  I cannot wait to have grand babies (which will probably never happen...kidding).  I am going to start collecting them for when and if I ever have grand babies, and this is the the top of my list :).

If you have kids this is a wonderful book.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Drew Daywalt
pic and bio taken from Goodreads

Ever since his childhood in one of Ohio’s most haunted houses, writer director Drew Daywalt has been writing escapist fantasy and building worlds of his own. With a degree in Creative Writing, and a concentration in Children’s Literature from Emerson College in Boston, Daywalt set off to Hollywood where he spent years writing for Disney and Universal on such beloved shows as Timon & Pumba, Buzz Lightyear, and Woody Woodpecker, and where his animated series The Wacky World of Tex Avery garnered an Emmy nomination.

His first trip into live action landed him studio screenwriting and feature film directing work with such Hollywood luminaries as Quentin Tarrantino, Lawrence Bender, Tony Scott, Brett Ratner and Jerry Bruckheimer.

With an eye toward picture book writing, Daywalt’s first book THE DAY THE CRAYONS QUIT, illustrated by Oliver Jeffers, debuted on the New York Times Best Seller’s List in June 2013, and has since become a Number One Best Seller.

ILLUSTRATOR:

Oliver Jeffers
OLIVER JEFFERS

From figurative painting and installation to illustration and picture-book making, his work has been exhibited in New York, Dublin, London, Sydney, Washington DC, Belfast and elsewhere.
A co-founder of the art collective OAR, their exhibitions include 9 days in Belfast, book and the award winning BUILDING.
Illustration clients include Orange UK, Lavazza, Sony PSP, RCA Records, Starbucks, Candy, the Vacuum and Her Royal Majesty the Queen of England.
HarperCollins UK and Penguin USA publish his picture books, including the award-winning Lost and Found and The Incredible Book Eating Boy.

There has always been a strong undercurrent of narrative behind Jeffers's work, but his current interest in making art lies in the anomaly between logical and emotional thinking.
While striving to find a harmonious balance between form and content, Jeffers is curious about the opposing means by which the world he lives in can be assessed. To explore this he has been drawing parallels between the arts and sciences, as in his recent solo show, Additional Information (exhibited December 2006, in Hill St Belfast), in which figurative oil paintings were over laid with mathematical equations.

AUDIO BOOK REVIEW FOR - WINTER - BY MARISSA MEYER - LUNAR CHRONICLES #4

13206900
pic and description taken from Goodreads

DESCRIPTION:

Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend—the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?

MY REVIEW / THOUGHTS:

I don't even if I know where to start.  I cannot believe this has come to a close.  This series has been hands down my favorite retelling of ALL TIME.  I love Meyer's books so much I cannot even express it.

I know I cannot say much because too many people haven't finished it, but I can tell you that if you have started the series, this book will NOT disappoint.  I love everything about this series.  Meyer's writing is absolutely beautiful.  Her mind blows me away.  Her creativity with the places she takes us to, and the people she brings to life is just beautiful.

We get to meet with all of our favorites again in this book with so much more excitement and anticipation.  I do have to admit Wolf is by far my favorite character, and he really came to life in this book.  Well besides Cinder of course:).  I love them all deeply.  I never knew I could love something that wasn't "real" as much as I do.  These books rank up with Harry Potter for me.  I never thought I would read a series, that made me as happy as Harry Potter, but Meyer did just that for me.

She made a cyborg girl, real.  She made a man who had been trained to be a killer, real.  She made a poor girl stuck in a satalie  blossom.  She made a girl from earth find our there is more to the world and helped her find more.  She found a thief who she taught how to rely on other people.   Every person Cinder came in contact with, that knew her loved her.

I am heartbroken it has come to an end.  I wish I could elaborate, but there is nothing worse than someone ruining a book.  Just pick this series up.  You will NOT be disappointed.  Meyer is an amazing author.  Her mind, and world is so fantastic, and she draws you in completely.  I was fully invested in all these great characters.  I cried like a 12 year old girl in this book.  I have never wanted a series to keep going as much as this one.  Well other than Harry Potter :).

So in my opinion, if you haven't picked up The Lunar Chronicles you are missing out on a fantastic adventure, that will open your heart to a whole new world.  Great characters, and AMAZING writing.

Genre – Contemporary Fantasy
Rating – PG13

About the Book:
Blessed–or cursed–with a connection to the souls of others, Sloan Jordan can see the best in people… and the worst. For twenty-seven years, she's kept her ability to judge the innocent from the wicked a secret, but eleven young women have been murdered in the mountains of North Carolina, and Sloan may be the only hope of finding their killer.
She has just agreed to help Detective Nathan McNamara with the case, when a stranger--who is as alluring as he is terrifying--shows up at her doorstep with a dark past and another puzzling mystery: she can't see his soul at all.
Now, Sloan is on the hunt for a deadly psychopath with two irresistible men. One of them would die for her, and the other would kill to keep her safe.

***

MY REVIEW / THOUGHTS:

Sloan has a very unique ability.  She seems to "know" everyone she meets.  She doesn't quite know what to do with her ability.  Sloan has tried her whole life to hide what she can do from everyone.  Her parents freaked out and when she had an "episode" and since then they seem to avoid any talk of her "ability".

When Sloan and her best friend are at dinner one night she seems to "summon" someone that her friend has a crush on.  When Sloan finally confided in her best friend she didn't freak out or give up on her friend.  Sloan still tried to keep her ability to herself.

That is until she meets Detective McNamara.  Nathan McNamara is just a whole lot of yummy.  Sloan seems to be drawn to him immediately.  Then, McNamara shows up at her office and shows her a picture and Sloan lets something slip about the man.  McNamara's interest in Sloan is piqued.

Detective McNamara enlists Sloan in his attempt to find some missing people.  From there their relationship gets more and more interesting.  Then walks in Warren.  Dark, and broody Warren.  He is also a whole lot of yummy.

There is something strange about Warren.  Sloan cannot "see" anything about him.  It's a mystery she has to solve.  When Sloan and Warren realize they are the same the story gets even more interesting.

This is such a great story.  I wish I could read people the way Sloan does.  It would make things so much easier.  Although I don't know if I would want to know the bad in people right off the bat though.

I thought this story was so interesting.  I loved the writing, and the voice of the author.  This was such a great mystery.  Again, I totally didn't see the bad guy.  I was positive it was someone else the whole time.  I just love it when that happens to me.  Of course, it probably happens to me more than most...hehehehe.  I really enjoyed this book.

AUDIO BOOK REVIEW FOR - RUN FOR YOUR LIFE - BY JEAN HOLBROOK MATHEWS

20568499
pic and description taken from Goodreads

DESCRIPTION:

Law student Theo Novak simply saw what no one else did: a suspicious link between an ongoing environmental lawsuit and the nomination of a new judge that would ensure a victory for the energy companies. He stumbled on a conspiracy that extended to the upper echelons of the US government—and wrote a legal brief to kill for… After a long and prestigious career, Congressman Max Southland is ready to retire, and as a member of his staff, Mattie Mathis is on hand to help her uncle wind down his career. When Mattie receives a cryptic call from her boyfriend and fellow staffer Craig, she’s left with more questions than answers: an interesting bit of research by a young law student has surfaced that could have national consequences. A copy is on its way to her. Before she can process this information, Craig is dead . . . and Mattie will be next. There is only one person who can help Mattie: Jack Summers, a cop whose sense of duty stems not only from his assignment but from his growing feelings for the woman he’s bound to protect. As the pair runs for their lives, it is clear that a violent cover-up has been plotted—and they must unravel the conspiracy if they hope to survive.

MY REVIEW / THOUGHTS:

Mattie's life isn't at all what she expected it to be.    She thought she had everything she ever wanted, and then it all changed in the blink of an eye.

Mattie has suffered a lot of loss in her life time.  Now she is facing the loss of her boyfriend Craig.  Mattie doesn't quite know how she is going to move on, but doesn't even really have time to think about it.  All of the sudden she is running for her life, and she doesn't even know for sure why.

Jack is a cop that is sent to investigate the killing of Mattie's boyfriend Craig.  While trying to interview Mattie he soon realizes that there is danger lurking and now is helping Mattie run for her life.

This story reminded me of the movie The Pelican Brief.  There is a study out that will put a lot of influential people in a sticky place, and someone is determined to not let anyone see it.  People are dying and Mattie and Jack are finding that it may all be connected.

While they search for the connection, attempts to on Mattie's life make her life a little unbearable.

This is an exciting story.  I believe the narrator was the same as the one I previously listened to and I didn't particularly like her.  She was much better in this book, but the book itself was fantastic.  I had this on CD and I had it in my car, and it kept me flipping discs.  I kept finding ways to be in my car.  Although in my life that isn't hard.

This was a clean, intense, CD changing book :).  I really enjoyed it.  I loved Mattie, and I loved Jack.  They are such great characters.  I loved the setting since most of it takes place in Arizona...my home town :).

If you enjoy mystery this is a great book to pick up, or listen to.

A HEARTWARMING THANKSGIVING TOUR / EXCERPT: WEDDING AT TURKEY RUN

On tour with Prism Book Tours.

TODAY'S FREE SHORT STORY:

Wedding at Turkey Run by Liz Flaherty

Jenny and Zeke are united by their suspicions when her grandmother and his grandfather decide to get married at Turkey Run State Park over the Thanksgiving weekend. Before the weekend and the wedding are over, they are united by much more.

Read it HERE!

Excerpt:

“Actually, Pap, do you still have my spare keys at your house?” Zeke scratched the back of his head.
“Sure. You know where they are.”
“Then if you don’t mind me using your car, I need to go get them. I seem to have locked mine inside the car.”
“And I need to drive back up to Crockett, too, Nana.” Jenny spoke up before Emma could start herding everyone where she wanted them to go. “All I have with me is my beach suitcase.”
“And rubber tubing,” Zeke inserted. “You have that. And Velcro.”
“I teach special ed.” She tilted her nose in response to the derision she heard in his voice. “Those are necessities.”
“Well, then, why don’t you drive Zeke up to Crawfordsville to get his keys?” Emma was going to herd them anyway—that was just the way she was. “That way, Travis and I will have his car to run the errands we need to. And maybe go parking. No time like the present to chase our lost youth.”
“Absolutely.” Travis pulled her into his side and nuzzled her ear.
Parking? Nuzzling? Youth? Was this really happening?          “Oh, well,” Jenny mumbled. If her students had used that tone, she would have told them to speak plainly. “Of course. All right with you?” She raised an eyebrow at Zeke.
“Sure. I’ll get you some gas.” He reached for the back pocket of his shorts. “When we get back, that is. My wallet seems to be locked in the car, too. The combination still the same to get in the house, Pap?”
“Yes. You kids drive safely and be careful. Your room keys will be at the desk when you get back.” Travis waved them off, Emma smiled brightly, and the older couple sauntered arm in arm toward the front doors of the inn.
Zeke bumped his head getting into Jenny’s compact car, and his legs didn’t fit that well once he was inside.
“Sorry.” Although she wasn’t. Even taking into account the gorgeousness of his eyes, hair and smile, there was something about Zeke McNeil that set her teeth on edge.
“Not a problem. The Mustang isn’t exactly the last word in comfort.”
She pulled onto the two-lane road that led out of the park.

“So,” said Zeke. “Two questions. Why do you really carry Velcro and rubber tubing in your trunk and what does your grandmother really want with Pap?”
