MY REVIEW / THOUGHTS:

Cas is a ghost hunter.  He and his mother move around to new places in search of ghosts.  Some are ghosts people report seeing and want to get rid of them, and some are ghost Cas happens upon.  Cas's mother is a witch, that comes in very handy during some very crucial moments in this book.  Cas's late father was a ghost hunter as well, and when he died his weapon called an athame was passed onto Cas.  

Cas has been summoned to another town that is haunted by a horrible ghost that has been killing people for 60 years.  Anna. 

Cas's introduction to Anna was by a group of people at a party he went to "to get to know" people.  Cas starts asking questions about if the town is haunted (which he knows it is, but he wants to gather as much info as possible).  The kids start going on about this house that is haunted by a ghost they call Anna Dressed in Blood.  The kids tell Cas that once someone goes into Anna's house they never come out.   A few town Jocks and a friend he just met decide to drive to Anna's house to scare Cas. 

What follows is an interesting story.  This book kept me on my toes.  I wish I could say it scared the pants off me, but it didn't.  Although it was a really, really good book.  Once Cas meets Anna, the whole town seems to be turned upside down.  Cas  cannot figure out what makes Anna the way she is.  She is a killing machine.

While Cas has faced Anna she proves to be far more difficult to kill than he planned on. 

I cannot even say much more, because I know I will give too much away.  I don't know if it was because I listened to it, and the narrator sounded very young, but it wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be.  It was more suspenseful.  It was very well done.  I enjoyed it from the minute I started and it was always hard to turn off.  

If you like "ghost" stories this will be a great one to pick up and read.  There is a lot going on in the book.  It's a lot of fun to follow.  I am anxious to see what the next installment brings :)!

Content:  There is some swearing and If I remember correctly the f-bomb is used a couple of times.  Not excessive.  It didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book.

So, I write books. Anna Dressed in Blood and Girl of Nightmares are horror, The Goddess War books are mythology, and Sleepwalk Society is contemporary. Different genres, because the world don't move to the beat of just one drum. Love to read, too. Fiction, philosophy, good books, bad books, because you take the good you take the bad you take them both and there you have a stack of books and stuff. I mean, you've got to be adventurous. There's more to life that what you're living, so take a chance and face the wind.

There's more coming soon like Slasher Girls and Monster Boys and Ungodly in 2015, so don't waste another minute on your cryin. We're nowhere near the end.

My likes include animals, food, and nostalgia. I mean, whatever happened to predictability? The milkman, the paperboy, the evening TV? Used to be everywhere you look, there's a heart, a hand to hold on to.

MY REVIEW / THOUGHTS:

This was such a cute book.  Shannon is convinced that when she was a little girl a gypsy told her that she would meet her husband at a wedding reception before she was thirty.  Little girls will believe anything when they are young.  

So since childhood Shannon has been convince that it will happen just that way.  One day she meets a boy that she knew when she was young, and thought she would not give away who she was until he mentioned that he knew her first.  This never happened.  She was convinced he was the same jerk she knew as a kid.

As she gets to know who she calls "jerkface" most of the book, she realizes he's not as bad as she thinks.  They start to hang out a lot more and become very good friends.  

This story made me laugh.  I cannot imagine still believing something from when I was a kid.  I always dreamed about what my wedding would be like, and I can even remember picking out my wedding dress, and everything.  Those things when I was young changed with age.  Shannon is convinced that what this "gypsy" told her is how she really is going to meet her man.  

It's hard to read a book when everyone around them knows whats going to happen, but the characters won't catch on.  Seriously frustrating.

This book was a fluffy, feel good book.  I am trying to read as many as I can before I dedicate my reading to scary books for the rest of  the month.  This was a sweet romance.  It's a typical boy meets girl, and falls in love story.  The couple finding the way to each other is fun to read about.

MY REVIEW / THOUGHTS:

This book is A.W.E.S.O.M.E.  I don't quite know how else to describe it.  It's like this book was written just for me.  I don't host many parties, but when I do I like to be prepared.  Now I don't have any excuse not to be.  This book has everything you can think of to plan a party.

The author suggest these 5 things when preparing a party.  I am putting them in the order they are in the book.  The "WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHO AND HOW".  That's how your party planning should start.  The author also suggests having a "planning folder" for each event.  I have to admit I already do that.  If I am planning a baby shower, or bridal shower, I keep everything together.  It helps me a ton.  

This is an author after my own heart!  I don't particularly like hosting parties, but when I do, I am not the type that can fly by the seat of my pants.  I have to be organized.  I cannot be "thrown" into something or it stresses me out and I don't have a good time.

There is a "Party Style Quiz" and I took it.  I just had to laugh.  I rated as "over the top / visionary".  Any one who really knows me that I try to make every thing as easy as possible.  So according to the descriptions in the book I think I rated "Party Stylist / DIY".  I chose this one because when I do host things I like to make the invitations myself, and the food by myself.  I like to put someone else on decorations because I do not know how to decorate worth beans.

The author suggests starting 6 weeks ahead of time.  Now that is organization.  Which I love.  I don't know if I could handle six weeks of preparation though, because planning it self stresses me out...hehehe  I know.  It's kind of an oxymoron.  I HAVE to be organized, but I cannot plan that long, or I get too stressed any way.  What's a girl to do...hehehe

Based on the ideas and all the "stuff" that goes with them, my parties are not "real" parties anyway. BUT, this book puts it in to little steps that make me feel like I "can" do sweet parties now.

I had to giggle at the suggestion of how many party guest to invite.  For kids it's suggested that 1 child per age plus one.  Ya, NO WAY will I ever have 13 boys in the same house at the same time.  hehehe   OR 17 girls at the same time.   But it's a good suggestion to keep it manageable.

This book literally has EVERYTHING you could think of for party planning!  Seriously.  The author has game ideas, drink ideas, food ideas, with recipes to back them up.

The pictures in this book are amazing as well.  She has table setting ideas.  I could go on forever.  I loved every single thing about this book.  It was fun to read.

If you like to throw parties, and get stressed out or just cannot come up with ideas, this book is for you!  It's fabulous.  FABULOUS!!

Skinshifter Novel Excerpt #7: The Face in the Mirror

Katja and Lauraisha walked through the dim stone hallway past several old metallic doors, all shut against the air, until they reached the last door, heavier than the others and held slightly ajar. Light streamed through the crack and, after some hesitation, the females peeked into the richly red-carpeted room. The room was again empty except for a lone figure staring into a full-length mirror. The figure was again cowled in black, but as the human and werecat watched, it lifted a gloved hand and pulled back the hood hiding its face.

A gasp escaped Lauraisha’s lips as they both stared at the male’s pale profile. He was almost elfish in his features, yet he possessed a strong chin and an aquiline nose, which added a roguish quality to his handsome face. He untied the cloak and let it fall in a careless heap about his boot-shod feet without taking his brilliant blue eyes away from the age-stained mirror. The act exposed waist-length black tresses cascading freely down bare shoulders and a leather-jerkin-covered chest. The male was powerfully muscled, and even though he was a paw-width shorter than Felan, Katja sensed that he could probably match the werewolf in speed and strength.

The male leaned toward the mirror while holding his quarterstaff like a shield across his chest and stared intently at his reflection. The females followed his gaze and spied the male’s likeness staring back at him. As the females watched, however, his reflection slowly changed into a sallow-skinned image, which retained most but not all of the male’s features. The creature in the mirror had a unique deep, purple scar that ran the length of his left arm and still wore his black cloak draped over his right shoulder. The most shocking difference between the two, however, was their eyes. While the male’s blue eyes betrayed a soul smote with anguish, the reflection’s blue eyes burned with terrible ire. His expression held insatiable hunger and hatred so vile that Katja had to turn away from the sight. She moved her attention to the cloakless male and beheld conflicting tremors of rage and grief wreak havoc across his face.

As the werecat and human watched, the figure in the mirror began to laugh—a cold, cruel sound that exposed the fully developed fangs of a vampire. The fiend’s maniacal laughter filled Katja’s being with revulsion so powerful that it made her want to retch. As the creature’s laughter continued, it intensified and the creature’s face morphed from that of a half-elf into the most horrible creature Katja had ever seen—a full Víchí with glowing red eyes, yellow fangs, corpse-white skin, and black-clawed fingers. The mirror emitted a sullen red glow around his body, making him seem even more terrifying, and Katja swore that she could smell the putrid stench of pure evil smoking off of the mirror’s surface.

The laughter turned into a triumphant shriek of insanity, but was cut off abruptly as the burning end of the cloakless male’s metallic staff smashed through the mirror. Glowing red shards exploded outward from the staff, lodging in the stone walls, high ceiling, and floor of the room. The unhurt male was bowed in exhaustion over the rubble of the mirror. His panting breath rattled dry in his throat and his eyes were shut tight against the world as he whispered, “Brother, how could you?”

MY REVIEW / THOUGHTS:

Let me start by saying I really enjoyed this book.  There were some things I didn't like, but lets start with what I did :).

Likes:

I liked the characters in this book.  Each one of them had something fun to add to the "hen do". 

I liked the suspense of the book.  I was hoping for scary but it was suspenseful.  Which is just as great if you ask my opinion. :)

I liked how I could feel like I was right next to the characters.  The author did a great job of putting me in the book.

I liked the ending in some ways...hehehe

Ware does such a great job of telling a story.  I came to love Nora (aka Lee, aka Leo).  Although I couldn't really relate to her because she is some what of a recluse.  But Ware did a great job of making her a likable character.

I didn't like Clare from the moment she opened her mouth.  Everyone has that "one" friend that is there because they "have" to be.  But, Ware did a great job of making her a love to hate character!.

The DO NOT LIKES:

I did not like the reason Nora held a grudge for so long.  Seriously...talk it out.  Who holds onto a grudge for 10 years.  What a waste of life.  (My husband kept reminding me that the people are not "real"....but the characters are "real" to me).

I did not like Flo.....she was a single white female crazy girl.  She may have not known she was, but that is my opinion of her.  She's one of those people that will be nice one moment and cut your throat the next.  

I did not like that James was a pansy.   I felt that he was a man that couldn't stand up for what he wanted because he was controlled by a woman.  Really?  I know this happens but really?  I laugh when people say "your husband "LET" you"....ummmm NO, I am my own person and I do what I want.  Not James, he was willing to do something behind his fiance's back.  People or characters like that make me mad. 

There is so much I could say about this book.  I guess the most important thing is that I really enjoyed reading it.  It was frustrating at times, because I wanted to slap Nora around a little.  Knock some sense into her.

The book is so suspenseful, in my opinion.  I was hoping for scary, but suspenseful is a good replacement for scary.  The ending of the book is intense, and fabulous.  I love how this book comes together at the end.

AUDIO BOOK REVIEW FOR - THE TWELVE - BY JUSTIN CRONIN

MY REVIEW / THOUGHTS:

I am loving this series.  The books are loooooooong, but they are wonderful.  I have been listening to this one for quite a while.  I only get to listen when I am getting ready or cleaning, which I love...but sometimes it doesn't offer me much time to listen.  I hated turning it off every time!

This book was so exciting.  There is so much going on as the humans try to get rid of the virals.  There are some who think that the world can exist with both, and then there are the smart ones, who know it's not possible.

Now, having said this, there are a few of the "virals" that are not "real" virals.  They still know whats right and wrong, and want the world to be returned to "normal".  Alicia and Amy are my favorites of these different beings.  They bring so much to this book.

I love how this book brought characters more into play from the first book.  We get to find out about what happened to a few "insignificant" characters from book one, that turn out to be very important in this installment.  

The fight was epic!  You must read to know what I am talking about.  The groups coming together was awesome.  The connections in this installment are so great.  I cannot wait to see what the third book brings!  I am so excited for it.

I don't want to say too much because I don't want to give anything away by accident.  I just really enjoyed this book and The Passage.  They are both fantastic.  I hate waiting for books to come out so I try really hard not to start them until they are all out.  Sometimes I just can't.  I must read them now...hehe

The next book doesn't come out till May of 2016...UGH!  That is a long time to wait to read about the epic conclusion of this series.  Well, I am hoping it's as epic as the first two :).

I love Cronin's writing and I really enjoy the narrator Scott Brick.  His voice is so nice to listen to.

I hope you will give this series a chance.  It has been so great so far.  The second book was even better than the first book.  I am hoping the trend continues with the third book.

MY REVIEW / THOUGHTS:

I have loved this series!  Loved it.  This book did not disappoint!  I am always afraid when a series comes to an end.  I know I have said this before, but I will say it again.  If a series ends badly it ruins the whole thing for me.    I am so glad this one did not do that for me.

This book was very exciting.  I couldn't put it down, until I had to :).  I think my favorite thing about these books are the pictures that come along with it.  They are always so creepy and fabulous.  They add so much more to the book.

While the peculiars try to find Miss P, they find out some interesting things about their powers.  Some get spent, and cannot use them they way they need to and others find out they had some they didn't know were there.

I love the kids I love how they pull together to find Miss P., and those who keep their loop in tact.  So much is going on in this book, and the characters are so fantastic.  We get to meet so many new "peculiars" and it's a lot of fun.

I have loved the world the the author brought to light in these books.  It is so fascinating.  The pictures, the people, the stories are just fantastic.  I am going to miss the world of the peculiars!

If you have enjoyed this series as much as I have I think you will be happy with the way things turn out.

I grew up in Florida, went to Kenyon College in Ohio, then film school at USC in LA, where I still live. I write books and screenplays, blog daily for mentalfloss.com, and make short films. 

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is my first novel. I'm really excited about it -- it was challenging and rewarding and I hope people like it. If you read that and like the found photographs in it, you might be interested in a book comprised entirely of found photographs that I have coming out January 2012 from HarperCollins. It's called Talking Pictures.
