THE REGENCY TOUR LAUNCH - A PERFECT STRANGER BY DONNA HATCH

A themed book tour through Prism Book Tours.

We're launching THE REGENCY TOUR for
A Perfect Secret
by Donna Hatch

Desperate to protect her father from trial and death, Genevieve breaks off her engagement with Christian Amesbury and marries a blackmailer. After a year of marriage, she flees her husband's violent domination only to have fate bring her back to Christian. Just when she thinks she's started a new life of safety and solitude, her husband tracks her down, stalks her, and threatens everyone she loves.

Still brokenhearted over Genevieve's betrayal a year ago, Christian can't believe she's come back into his life--and worse, that she's done it on the anniversary of his brother's death, a death that haunts him. Though tempted to throw her back into the river where he found her, he can't leave her at the mercy of the terrifying man she married.

When her husband torments Genevieve and puts his family in danger, Christian will do anything to protect those he loves...anything except give Genevieve another chance to break his heart.

More About A Perfect Secret and Its Author, Donna Hatch

What is your motivation behind this book? Why did you want to write it?

I wrote this book pretty much for the same reason I write anything--because I get a story idea that haunts me and I finally start writing it. So, yeah, I basically succumb to the voices in my head. It's an inevitable ending. You do know that writers are basically schizophrenic, right? Most of us are non-violent though. We prefer to torture fictional characters, not real people. Of course, sometimes fictional characters seem more real, and certainly more interesting that real people. But I digress.

A Perfect Secret, in particular, began partly because my editor encouraged me to write a story about each brother in the family so it could be a familial series which typically sell better than single title or books with only a second book. Originally, there were two brothers in the Amesbury family, but she suggested I should have at least three books in the series. It was her idea that the Bow Street Runner in the first book, The Stranger She Married, could be a brother, hence Grant was born. I am writing his story now. He's not a true Runner, just someone who helps them from time to time. Christian, the hero of A Perfect Secret, appeared of his own accord during a revision of The Stranger She Married. I knew right off that he needed his own book, too. I had the idea for A Perfect Secret years ago about someone trying to leave her abusive husband (no, this is not based on my marriage :-) and her husband chasing her down and stalking her. The plot solidified a bit more when I saw the movie Sleeping with the Enemy, but with a number of obvious differences. The first draft of the story had the heroine in love with someone else, whom her husband kills, and the hero was "just a friend" with whom she ended up falling in love. But this version worked better.

What do you hope readers take with them when they read your book?

I hope they will believe that love is real and it can help us find the courage to do what we believe is right. I also hope they will question what they think they know about people and let go of prejudice, and even help them forgive those who have hurt them.

Do you have a favorite scene?

I have several favorite scenes. The opening scene ranks up near the top because it's so emotional. And I really love the scene where the heroine first starts to believe that maybe she can trust the hero. I also love the scenes with Christian's sister Rachel because she's so outspoken and they have such fun sibling banter. Sooo, a favorite? Actually, taken out of context, the other scenes probably wouldn't have much of an impact for a reader. So I'll share the first paragraph of the opening scene. This chapter takes place when the hero is a child. But I promise, the rest of the book is when he is an adult.
Six-year-old Christian Amesbury stood in the churchyard, trying not to crush the flowers he’d brought to put in front of the family crypt where they’d laid his brother to rest, the brother he loved, the brother he killed.
Alone in every way, he stood, shaking, as his last taunting words to Jason echoed in his head. Christian had wanted to prove he was brave and strong. Instead, his brother, best friend and advocate, was dead.
His throat tightened and tears blurred his vision. “I’m sorry, Jason,” he whispered. “I’m so sorry. I miss you.” He knelt and placed his offering of wildflowers in front of the crypt.
A drop of rain landed on his cheek and mingled with his tears. He stood unmoving, embracing the desolation. He had no one to blame but himself.
Share something about you that is unique - maybe about how/where you write... or favorite snack foods?

I have trained myself to write on the fly. That may be when it's slow at work, while dinner is simmering, or in the waiting room of a doctor's or dentist's office, or during soccer practice, or whenever I think I may have at least 15 minutes to write. If I'm really struggling with a scene or with edits and I find myself trying to put it off, I line up bite-sized chocolates, like Dove or something equally indulgent, on my desk in front of the computer screen. I eat one and start to work. When I get stuck on something, or just when I feel like it, I eat another one. It helps. I've discovered chocolate is the solution to many of the world's woes. If politicians would begin negotiations with chocolate, everyone would be on better behavior.

My passion for writing began at the tender age of 8 and I’ve been hooked ever since. Of course, I also wanted to be an actress and a ballerina, but one out of three isn’t bad, right?

In between caring for six children, (7 counting my husband), my day job, my free lance editing and copy writing, and my many volunteer positions, I manage to carve out time to indulge in my writing obsession. After all, it IS an obsession. My family is more patient and supportive than I deserve.

PERFECTED BY KATE JARVIK BIRCH - REVIEW

18630496
pic and description taken from Goodreads

Description:

Perfection comes at a price.

As soon as the government passed legislation allowing humans to be genetically engineered and sold as pets, the rich and powerful rushed to own beautiful girls like Ella. Trained from birth to be graceful, demure, and above all, perfect, these “family companions” enter their masters’ homes prepared to live a life of idle luxury.

Ella is happy with her new role as playmate for a congressman’s bubbly young daughter, but she doesn’t expect Penn, the congressman’s handsome and rebellious son. He’s the only person who sees beyond the perfect exterior to the girl within. Falling for him goes against every rule she knows…and the freedom she finds with him is intoxicating.

But when Ella is kidnapped and thrust into the dark underworld lurking beneath her pampered life, she’s faced with an unthinkable choice. Because the only thing more dangerous than staying with Penn’s family is leaving…and if she’s unsuccessful, she’ll face a fate far worse than death.

For fans of Keira Cass’s Selection series and Lauren DeStefano’s Chemical Garden series, Perfected is a chilling look at what it means to be human, and a stunning celebration of the power of love to set us free, wrapped in a glamorous—and dangerous—bow.

My Review / Thoughts:

Sometimes there comes a book that makes me question what really goes though peoples minds...hehe  I mean that in a good way.  I would never be able to come up with the ideas that I often read about.  This one is no exception.  I do not think I would ever think about making people "pets".  It just sounds like a disaster in the making.

Ella, is bread to be a pet.  She is given to a Congressman and his family, for one of their daughters as a playmate.  Although I think it is for the sick, disturbed Congressman really.  The Congressman has been fighting to get legislation passed to make it legal to own a human as a pet.  When it passes he feels he needs to "own" one to support the bill he was fighting for.  I mean, how sick and wrong is that?  It's slavery at a whole new level.  Except these "pets" are bred to do whatever their human "owners" want.  They are trained in music, and proper etiquette, because really only the wealthy can afford them.

Ella is paraded about the Congressman's wealthy friends, but the Congressman has neighbors close to him that are very against this legislation.  There is a group that is "freeing" the pets and Ella find herself captured by one such person.  She thinks she is freeing Ella, but Ella does not want to be freed, or so she thinks.  She has come to love her place and the Congressman's family.

When Ella is found and returned to her home, Penn, the Congressman's son invades her heart.  Their feelings for each other are "cute".  Yes, I said cute because Ella is only 16, and to be anything other than "cute" is just too mature in my opinion.  I think that Penn and Ella get way too involved for teenagers, but it makes for a good story.

Penn is determined to have Ella, but the Congressman has other plans for Ella.  He wants her all for himself.  (Which is just sick and wrong...in my opinion).

This story is so interesting.  I cannot imagine having a human as a pet.  I cannot imagine going to the "pound" (okay, that isn't what it's called...but it's basically the same thing) to pick out another human to use as my child's friend or playmate.  The whole concept is so disturbing, but it is also what kept me reading.

I like Ella.  She is so young, and so naive but even so, she is learning that there is far more to live than what the kennel has taught her.  She is finding out that she can have feelings of her own, and a life of her own, even though it goes against all that the training she has had.

She is beautiful, talented, and proper.  She is not suppose to have feelings other than how to please her masters.

It really is an interesting story.  It's a bit disturbing at times, because I think the Congressman's attraction to her is just plain creepy.

The story was exciting, and interesting.  It made me think about what actual "pets" think of their owners...hehe.  I wonder if they have their own thoughts and feelings.  I am sure they do, but I don't have animals and never will, so I don't know.  But I cannot imagine having a "pet" that could talk to me, and eat dinner with me.  Strange :).

I think it's an interesting concept, and a fascinating read.

THE CITY BY DEAN KOONTZ - REVIEW

pic and description taken from Netgalley

Description:
The city changed my life and showed me that the world is deeply mysterious. I need to tell you about her and some terrible things and wonderful things and amazing things that happened . . . and how I am still haunted by them. Including one night when I died and woke and lived again.

Here is the riveting, soul-stirring story of Jonah Kirk, son of an exceptional singer, grandson of a formidable “piano man,” a musical prodigy beginning to explore his own gifts when he crosses a group of extremely dangerous people, with shattering consequences. Set in a more innocent time not so long ago, The City encompasses a lifetime but unfolds over three extraordinary, heart-racing years of tribulation and triumph, in which Jonah first grasps the electrifying power of music and art, of enduring friendship, of everyday heroes.

The unforgettable saga of a young man coming of age within a remarkable family, and a shimmering portrait of the world that shaped him, The City is a novel that speaks to everyone, a dazzling realization of the evergreen dreams we all share. Brilliantly illumined by magic dark and light, it’s a place where enchantment and malice entwine, courage and honor are found in the most unexpected quarters, and the way forward lies buried deep inside the heart.

My Review / Thoughts:

When this book came up on Netgalley, I requested it right away.  I thought it sounded very interesting.  I really wish I could say that I loved it, but unfortunately that is not the case.  So, lets start off with what I liked about the book.

I enjoyed the writing.  It was really well done.  I enjoyed the idea of the story.  I liked how things connected and at times it was actually a little nerve racking.  The poor little boy had to go through a lot in his young life.  I liked Jonah as a character.  I loved his talent.  When Koontz described him playing the piano, I could feel the love he had for his talent.   I absolutely loved his mother and Grandfather.  They were such great characters.

I don't really know what to say.  The idea of the boy narrating his own life as a child is interesting enough, but for me it was way too wordy.  I felt like I was reading more about the inside of a room sometimes, than I was about an actual story.  It was just way too boring for me in between the actual dialogue and story.  I know for most people this will be what draws them in, but I just really am not into a lot of description.

I appreciate the opportunity to review the book.  I love to see different styles of writing, and Koontz really is a great author.  This book just wasn't one for me.

CARNELIAN BY B. KRISTIN McMICHAEL - BOOK TOUR

Release Date: 02/01/14
200 pages

Summary from Goodreads:
Everyone has a past, but for most it isn’t as long ago as Seth Sangre. His past is literally thousands of years ago. Seth’s life led him to the present seeking something that might help him save his country from destruction. He has been in the present for over three years now and just found exactly what he has been looking for.

Mari had dreams that college will be a fresh start, one where she would start over and not fall for the good looking player like high school. Unfortunately for her, that’s exactly what ends up falling into her lap on the first day she moves into the dorms. Now she has to hold to her promise to herself and not fall for the handsome Seth. But he doesn’t plan to make it easy for her. Seth has already marked her as his next conquest. As the semester progresses, Mari learns that Seth might just have a life of his own that’s actually from the past.

Suddenly Mari finds her future along with her past put into question. She’s connected to Seth far more than she ever wanted to be and maybe the player isn’t who she thought he was. If Mari can trust her heart enough to follow him, Seth will lead Mari on an adventure of a lifetime and reveal family secrets she never knew existed.

My Review / Thoughts:
This was such an interesting read.  I have to admit at the beginning I wasn't sure I was going to like this one.  It was a bit slow, but man oh man, am I glad I stayed with it.

I love past and present mixing, and coming together.  It always makes things so very interesting.  Seth and his "brothers" are hot shots on campus, and Seth has decided he has an eye for Mari.  Mari has decided she is not getting involved again, with someone who isn't serious.  Seth has a players reputation, and she is not going for it.

Well, Seth has a story to tell.  There is far more to this handsome, jock, than meets the eye.  He and his brothers are always in the right place at the right time, and always seem to be saving Mari.  Mari, finally gets some answers, and lets her walls fall down and finds out what a great guy Seth is.  She is hooked, and then her world changes.

I enjoyed the story going from present to past.  I really liked how things connected in the past, and came back to the present.  There is so much to this story.

The past has adventure, mystery, an ancient Princess, a Gatekeeper, and Soldiers.  The present, hosts the Gatekeeper, an ancient Princess and Soldiers.  It is so fantastic how they come together.

I was at an appointment when I finished this book, and let out an audible "uuuhhhhh".  It so cannot end the way it ended.  I need the next book like NOW.  hehehe.  This is going to be a great series, and this book was a great opener.

RANDOM READ #3 - OPEN ROAD SUMMER - BY EMERY LORD

I found this awesome meme because of Feed Your Fiction Addiction which led me to I'm Loving Books.  I love this meme.  It helps me read at least one book a month in my TBR pile that I have been dying to read and just haven't been able to.  This month my random pick was #385 but since it was the second book of a series I chose to do #384 also.  I also picked #425, I wasn't sure I was going to get to it, but thankfully I did :).

#425 is:

16081202
pic and description taken from Goodreads

Description:

After breaking up with her bad-news boyfriend, Reagan O’Neill is ready to leave her rebellious ways behind. . . and her best friend, country superstar Lilah Montgomery, is nursing a broken heart of her own. Fortunately, Lilah’s 24-city tour is about to kick off, offering a perfect opportunity for a girls-only summer of break-up ballads and healing hearts. But when Matt Finch joins the tour as its opening act, his boy-next-door charm proves difficult for Reagan to resist, despite her vow to live a drama-free existence. This summer, Reagan and Lilah will navigate the ups and downs of fame and friendship as they come to see that giving your heart to the right person is always a risk worth taking. A fresh new voice in contemporary romance, Emery Lord’s gorgeous writing hits all the right notes.

My Review / Thoughts:

I was super excited that this book came up for my random read.  I have been wanting to read it for a while.  It was so, so good.

Dee (aka Lilah Montgomery) is a teenage super star.  Reagan is her troubled best friend.  Reagan is trying to get away from her life and make better choices when Dee invites her along for her summer tour.  Dee is a sweet girl, that has everything she thought she wanted.  She is a star, and she is going on her first tour as the headliner and wants her best friend by her side.  Reagan gladly accepts and goes along for the ride.  Reagan is a photographer, and tells her father that she would use the time to add to her portfolio.

Dee is in love with Jimmy Collier, but he wants a "normal" life and doesn't want to hold Dee back, so he breaks up with her.  She is heart broken and cannot seem to get over it.

When a picture of Dee is leaked of her that shows her kissing her ex-boyfriend her team goes into repair mode.  They add Matt Finch as a opener.  Then everything gets more complicated.

I love Matt.  He is just and all around nice guy who has gone though a really hard time.  He use to be in a band with his brothers, but is now going trying out on his own and Dee's offer helps him achieve this goal.

Dee is that friend that everyone should have.  Loyal, kind and loves her friend unconditionally.  Dee is the kind of friend every parent hopes their child has.  I liked Reagan.  I feel kind of bad for her.  Yes, I say kind of bad.  When you make stupid choices, you cannot expect things to go all peachy.  Seriously.  I do like that she finally sees the fault in her ways, and is trying to make her life better.

Okay, now what I don't like.  I really did like this book, don't get me wrong...but there are just a few things.  I really do not like reading about teenagers taking on such serious relationships.  I know there are a lot of teenagers out there that can have mature relationships, but I still don't like it.  I just think its so unrealistic.  I do not like the thought of teenagers going into stardom.  I know it happens, but I don't usually see good things happen when it does.  I just think the story would have been even better for me if they were just a smidgen older.

Now, having said all of this, I still loved the book.  It made me happy, and sad.  When Reagan is betrayed (or so she thinks) again, my heart broke for her.  I cried.  Like little girl cry.  Which made me crazy because she was a young girl, and she should not be going through so much heart ache.

I could not put this book down.  I read a few pages the other day, and knew right away that it was going to be one I couldn't put down.  SO, I put it down for a day, and then picked it up last night.  When I say I couldn't put it down, I am not kidding.  I started it about midnight, and didn't go to bed until 5:30 a.m.  YES!!!  5:30 AM.  I could not put it down.  I love, love, love when books draw me in like this :).

THE SHADOW SOUL BY KAITLYN DAVIS - REVIEW

20903363
pic and description taken from Goodreads

Description:

When Jinji's home is destroyed, she is left with nowhere to run and no one to run to--until she meets Rhen, a prince chasing rumors that foreign enemies have landed on his shores. Masquerading as a boy, Jinji joins Rhen with vengeance in her heart. But traveling together doesn't mean trusting one another, and both are keeping a deep secret--magic. Jinji can weave the elements to create master illusions and Rhen can pull burning flames into his flesh.

But while they struggle to hide the truth, a shadow lurks in the night. An ancient evil has reawakened, and unbeknownst to them, these two unlikely companions hold the key to its defeat. Because their meeting was not coincidence--it was fate. And their story has played out before, in a long forgotten time, an age of myth that is about to be reborn...

My Review / Thoughts:

I had to review The Golden Cage for a tour, which is a prequel to this book.  As soon as I was done reading The Golden Cage, I immediately downloaded this book, because I had to know what was going to happen.  Dang it, now I have to wait for the next book also :).  I mean that in a good way.  I really have enjoyed this series so far.

Jinji has lost everything and is pretending to be a boy.  Not just any boy but her twin brother that was killed.   Jinji can make things appear to be different than they really are.  The true illusionist.  It is quite a journey.

Rhen is a mischievous prince, who is trying to prove to his father that he can be an asset to the kingdom, even though Rhen isn't sure that is what he really wants.  He runs into Jinji and they become fast friends.

I could tell that their friendship was going to be fantastic from the minute they met.  They both seem like lost souls that have finally found common ground.  Jinji discovers that there is more to the prince than meets the eye.   She helps him see that his connection to fire is not a bad thing.

I love the fact that we are going to find out who wields the powers of earth, fire, and water.  Although I think we find out for sure who wields waters power in the prequel :).  I am anxious to find out who wields the other elements, and how they are going to find each other.

While Jinji is befriending Rhen she tells him about a "shadow" that she is following, that is killing people without any one knowing.  Rhen doesn't believe there is a "shadow" killing people until he sees it first hand.

I don't really know how to sum this up, other than it was just a fun story to read.  It kept me wanting more.  Sometimes the world building and descriptions got to be a bit wordy, but in the end it turned out okay.  When it got too wordy I just skimmed over it to get to the more interesting stuff :).

I love the fact that we see what happens to some of the characters from the prequel in this book.  It is going to be a fantastic series.  I am really looking forward to the rest.  I love stories about magic.  There is something so fascinating about them.  This was an exciting book.  Jinji and Rhen's journey is hard, and sometimes really sad, but they find each other and learn what true friendship is really about........until the end.  Ugh, this is when I get very impatient about not having the whole series right at my fingertips :).
