Rook

Could you be the monster to save who you love? Two women, separated by generations, must leave what they know to start a new life. Seventeen-year-old Kate's senior year is ruined when she's moved from the only home she's ever known. After an isolating month alone in her apartment, school starts, but neither her classmates nor her teacher are who they seem. Kali, a single mother living in the nineteenth century wilds of Montana, is stalked by a malicious past. She fights to keep her daughter safe while her freedom is threatened by her less than benevolent benefactor. Both find love, and with it hope, but that is quickly ripped away as one woman must learn the lessons of the other -- before it's too late to save either.

Excerpt Is that him? Is he back? My legs jerked, kicking and twitching me around to face the sound. I managed to roll slightly, knocking against a soft, solid object at my feet. It grunted weakly, and immediately I recoiled as though I had been bitten. Squinting, I stared, willing my eyes to find light in the dark, but there was nothing. The sound of the runner drew closer, as if they would trample me any moment. A dim, swaying light appeared through the trees, burning away the inky edges of the deep shadows. When light and sound were almost upon me, branches above me snapped, spraying me in a shower of dried pine needles and snow.

My Review / Thoughts:

I cannot even begin to tell you how much I liked this book.  It seems that all the books I have been given lately for review are just amazing.

First of all I really like the story as it is told from two different people, during two different generations at the same time.  It is so great to see how it all comes together.

The whole time I assumed they were going to come together, but it took me a while to figure out just how it was going to happen.

Kali is plagued by a man named Christian who wants to own her.  She does all she can to keep her and her daughter out of his grasp because Kali knows Christian has an evil side to him.  During the book you come to learn that there is so much more to their relationship than meets the eye, and it's fascinating.

Kate finds herself in a new town, away from her friends, about to start at a new school.  When Kate met Chase I thought it was going to be an instant love connection, but then we meet Sean.  Sean is the her best friend from childhood, and he comes to surprise her at her new house.  Many think he is a troubled young man, but Kate sees him for who he really is.

When these characters come together and the two generations begin to connect I found myself taking every spare moment to read so I could figure out how it all comes together.

We are met with unlikely heroes, and a collision of generations, and it's absolutely wonderful.  I loved this book.  The ending shouldn't have surprised me but it did, and made it even better.

If you like mystery, and magic, and love stories, this is a great book that involves all three.  I am so glad I had the opportunity to review it.  I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
